Define what 100 fry means

“Produced” could mean born, alive after 24 hours, eating independently, alive at four weeks or ready for a new home. Those are completely different outcomes. AquaNexus should never present a target without the counting point.

A useful production measure would count healthy juveniles at a defined age, with deformities, deaths and unplanned losses recorded separately. Birth count still matters, but it measures brood size rather than the quality of the whole system.

Work backwards from grow-out capacity

One hundred fry per week becomes roughly 400 new fry in four weeks before any sales, rehoming or movement. If juveniles remain longer, the standing population climbs quickly. The first calculation is therefore not the number of breeding females. It is how many healthy juveniles the available tanks can carry without excessive maintenance or slowed growth.

The plan needs separate space for newborn fry, intermediate juveniles, sex separation, breeder replacements, quarantine and any fish that cannot be sold or rehomed immediately.

Use staggered groups instead of one large event

A steady weekly target is more manageable when breeding groups are staggered. One large brood week followed by a quiet month creates uneven feeding, filtration and sales pressure. Staggering spreads the work and makes problems easier to trace to a specific group.

  • Give each breeding group a permanent ID.
  • Record female introduction, observed mating, expected birth window and actual birth date.
  • Move fry as a batch and preserve the parent link.
  • Do not combine batches until the reason for combining is recorded.

Measure survival by stage

A single final survival percentage hides where the system is failing. Record at least the birth estimate, day seven, week four and movement to sale or permanent housing. If losses are concentrated in the first week, investigate birth conditions, feeding access and water stability. If losses rise after grading, investigate handling and density.

Feed for growth without turning tanks into waste traps

Fry need frequent access to suitable food, but a production target can tempt the keeper to solve slow growth by adding more food. Every increase must be matched by observation, waste removal, filtration and water changes. Record feed type and meals, then compare growth rather than assuming appetite proves the ration is correct.

Separate breeding quality from saleable appearance

Breeding records should track health, structure, fertility and parentage, not colour alone. Do not keep producing fish merely because the system can. Breeder selection, pet-grade placement and responsible rehoming all need a plan before numbers rise.

Set stop rules before the room is full

  • Pause pairings when grow-out capacity reaches the agreed limit.
  • Pause when water changes or feeding cannot be completed reliably.
  • Pause when disease, deformity or unexplained mortality increases.
  • Pause when there is no realistic outlet for juveniles.
  • Do not count disposal of surplus fish as a successful production system.

What AquaNexus should calculate

The app should link each fry batch to parents, track stage counts, show survival between checkpoints and forecast future tank demand. It should also display the difference between target, forecast and measured result.

The target becomes useful when it forces the system to answer a harder question: can 100 healthy guppy juveniles be raised each week without compromising welfare, record quality or available homes?
