The recorded heater load
An AquaNexus project audit from April 2025 listed 38 aquarium heaters across several wattages. The connected rating added to 2,900 watts: nine 150 W heaters, twenty-two 25 W heaters recorded in two groups, one 200 W heater, one 300 W heater and five 100 W heaters.
This is a historical equipment list. It should be recounted before making current electrical decisions. Its value is the method: nameplate ratings show the maximum connected load, while electricity use depends on how long each heater actually runs.

Connected watts are not kilowatt-hours
If every heater were on at once, the connected load would be 2.9 kW. Energy is that power multiplied by run time. A heater cycling for ten minutes each hour uses far less than one running continuously. The room, tank insulation, lids, airflow, target temperature and outdoor weather all change the duty cycle.
The room is part of the heating system
Every open tank loses heat to the room through evaporation and air movement. A cold, draughty fish room can force each heater to fight the same building problem. Lids, room insulation and stable ambient temperature may reduce total heater run time, but they must not compromise ventilation or create unsafe condensation.
The best strategy is not automatically “heat the room” or “heat each tank”. The answer depends on how many tanks need the same temperature, the room envelope, summer cooling, humidity and the consequence of a central heating failure.
Group temperatures into deliberate zones
Do not set every tank differently without a biological reason. Temperature zones simplify monitoring and reveal outliers. A breeding trigger tank may need a temporary change, but its record should show when the change began and when the normal set point returns.
Heater thermostats are not reference instruments
The number printed on a heater is a setting, not proof of water temperature. Use independent thermometers and compare tanks on the same rack. A heater that runs longer than similar tanks may indicate a failing thermostat, poor circulation, missing lid or a colder location.
Plan for both stuck-off and stuck-on failure
A failed-off heater can cool a tank. A failed-on heater can overheat it. Large heaters can create faster temperature change when they fail. Independent temperature alerts, sensible heater sizing and redundancy reduce risk, but they do not remove the need to inspect equipment.
Electrical planning belongs to a licensed electrician
The connected load helps an electrician assess circuits, outlets and protection. It does not authorise the aquarium keeper to add fixed wiring or overload power boards. Wet areas, condensation, multiple heaters and pumps require conservative cable management and protected outlets.
The minimum useful energy record
- Heater model, rating, tank and installation date.
- Target and measured water temperature.
- Room temperature during the measurement period.
- Lid, insulation and airflow changes.
- Measured energy or run-time estimate.
- Thermostat drift, failure or replacement.
- Season and outdoor conditions.
The next AquaNexus test
Repeat the heater inventory, then measure representative tanks in winter and summer. Compare similar sizes on different racks. The useful result is not a single annual estimate; it is knowing which tanks and room conditions drive the load.
That information can support safer circuits, better insulation decisions and realistic energy forecasting without pretending the nameplate total is the power bill.
