Use plants for a job
In a breeding or grow-out tank, a plant should earn its space. It may provide cover for fry, a grazing surface for shrimp, a visual break for adults or a place for eggs. Decorative value is welcome, but it should not obstruct the work the tank exists to do.
AquaNexus records should therefore capture the plant's role, not only its species name.
Balance cover with observation
Dense Java moss or floating growth can improve survival by creating microhabitats and reducing direct predation. The same growth can hide dead fry, trap food and make accurate counting difficult. Keep a deliberate observation zone and a deliberate refuge zone rather than filling the whole tank uniformly.
Attached plants simplify cleaning
Anubias and Java fern can be attached to removable wood or stone, allowing the keeper to lift the plant during cleaning or move it between prepared tanks. Their rhizomes should remain exposed rather than buried. Removable plant modules also make it easier to disinfect or quarantine hardscape without destroying a planted substrate.
Rooted plants need a reason in grow-out
Rooted plants such as Vallisneria or Amazon swords can provide structure, but deep substrate complicates waste removal in heavily fed fry tanks. Use them where the biological and behavioural benefit justifies the maintenance cost. A display tank and a production grow-out tank do not need the same planting style.
Set light for plant need and livestock routine
Longer or brighter light is not a substitute for balanced plant care. Excess light can increase algae and make fry-room maintenance harder. Use a stable schedule, observe new growth and adjust gradually. If plants are only present as low-demand cover, do not force a high-energy planted-tank routine onto the breeding system.
Feed plants without losing control of the tank
Heavy fish feeding may provide some nutrients, but it does not guarantee a balanced supply. Fertiliser decisions should consider the plants, water changes, substrate and sensitivity of shrimp or fry. Record the product, dose, date and tank rather than adding fertiliser from memory.
Plants can move problems between tanks
Shared moss, tools and plant modules can transfer snails, algae, pathogens or medication residue. Quarantine new plants where practical and avoid moving wet material from a treatment tank into a breeding system without a deliberate cleaning process.
Trim for function
- Keep feeding zones visible.
- Prevent growth from blocking sponge-filter lift or surface movement.
- Remove decaying leaves before they become trapped waste.
- Preserve some mature biofilm surface when trimming shrimp or fry cover.
- Record major trims because they change shelter, light and nutrient demand.
What to record
Track plant species, source, placement, attachment method, light schedule, fertiliser, trimming, algae pressure and the livestock outcome the plant is meant to support. For fry cover, compare survival and visibility. For shrimp grazing, note juvenile use and feeding response.
The goal is not to prove that “planted tanks are better”. It is to learn which plant arrangement improves the specific tank without hiding the problems that still need to be managed.
