Do not treat every Corydoras as one production line

Sterbai, pepper, emerald and orange Venezuelan Corydoras may share broad breeding behaviours, but they should not be merged into one anonymous “Cory” record. Each group needs a species or strain identity, source, sex estimate and its own batch history.

A weekly target can be calculated across species, but success must still be visible by group. Otherwise one productive group can hide repeated failures in another.

Conditioning is a system, not one special meal

Breeding condition reflects consistent food quality, body condition, stable water, group structure and time. Record feeding changes and body condition before a spawning attempt. A sudden increase in rich food without matching maintenance can degrade water before it improves breeding condition.

A trigger does not replace readiness

Cooler water, a larger water change or simulated rainfall may coincide with spawning, but the same trigger will not create mature eggs in poorly conditioned fish. Record the exact change, temperature before and after, conductivity or hardness where available, weather conditions and the time spawning began.

Egg handling needs a defined method

Choose whether eggs remain with the adults, are moved to a hatching container or are collected into a dedicated tank. The method should be consistent enough to compare batches. Record egg count as an estimate if every egg cannot be counted without damage.

  • Batch ID and parent group.
  • Spawn date and collection time.
  • Estimated eggs, fertile eggs and fungus losses.
  • Hatch date and temperature.
  • Hatching container, water source and aeration method.

The first-feeding window is a major bottleneck

Newly hatched fry do not need the same feeding routine as free-swimming fry. The record should separate hatch from first feed and note when yolk reserves are absorbed. Food must be small enough, available where fry rest and offered without creating a layer of decay.

Observe bellies rather than trusting that food was added. If the fry are not visibly feeding, adding more of the wrong food makes the water worse without solving the problem.

Clean water without violent change

Small hatching containers and dense fry groups can change rapidly. Use gentle removal of waste, matched replacement water and stable temperature. The aim is not sterile water; it is low waste, oxygen and a mature biological path that does not expose tiny fry to sudden swings.

Plan the move before the hatch

Fry should not remain in a small hatching container simply because the next tank is not ready. Define the movement checkpoint by size, feeding behaviour and water demand. Keep the batch identity through every move.

What 100 per week would actually require

The target must be defined as healthy fry at a set age, not eggs collected. To sustain it, the system needs enough parent groups to absorb natural variation, enough hatching capacity for overlapping batches and enough grow-out space for several weeks of juveniles.

The target should be paused when care quality falls, not defended by lowering the counting standard. A batch that survives only because another tank was overcrowded is not a successful batch.

What AquaNexus should connect

Each batch should link trigger, parents, eggs, hatch, first feed, losses, tank moves and final outcome. A timeline should show where survival falls and whether a change improved more than one batch.

That is the difference between collecting breeding stories and building a breeding system.
