What a scud looks like

Freshwater amphipods are small crustaceans with a compressed body, obvious legs and a distinctive curved profile. They crawl through plants and detritus and can swim or flick rapidly when disturbed. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Field Station describes many scuds as bottom-dwelling animals associated with vegetation and decaying material, with detritus and surface growth forming an important part of their diet.

Do not confuse them with seed shrimp, copepods or juvenile ornamental shrimp. A macro photograph should show the segmented, shrimp-like body and multiple legs. If the animal is actually a juvenile shrimp from your colony, “pest control” would obviously be destructive.

Why shrimp keepers notice them

Shrimp aquariums provide exactly the resources many small amphipods can use: biofilm, plant material, leaf litter and fine food. A fish-free tank also removes major predators. That means scuds can become abundant even when the aquarium is healthy. Their success is not proof of contamination or neglect.

The issue is resource overlap. A large scud population can reach food quickly and may compete with baby shrimp for fine feeds and grazing areas. Some amphipods are opportunistic and species behaviour differs, so vulnerable eggs, tiny fry or newly moulted animals deserve direct observation. Avoid claiming that every unexplained shrimp loss is scud predation simply because scuds are visible.

Decide whether intervention is justified

If adult and juvenile shrimp are growing, berried females are carrying normally and shrimplet survival is acceptable, a small scud population may not warrant disruptive action. If scud numbers are climbing rapidly while target livestock lose access to food, or you repeatedly observe direct attacks on vulnerable animals, management is more defensible.

First rule out other causes of poor shrimp survival: ammonia or nitrite, unstable mineral balance, temperature stress, inappropriate tankmates, failed moults, inadequate first foods and filter intake losses. A visible hitchhiker is easy to blame because it can be seen; invisible water-quality problems are often more important.

Reduce scuds without sacrificing the shrimp

Why chemical control is especially risky in a shrimp tank

Scuds and ornamental shrimp are both crustaceans. A treatment toxic enough to target one crustacean group may have unacceptable risk for another, and product claims often do not cover every shrimp species, life stage or aquarium condition. Even “natural” products can be biologically active. Do not expose the colony to a tank-wide chemical simply because physical control is slower.

Adding a predatory fish is also a poor default in a shrimp breeding tank because the fish may consume shrimplets more efficiently than scuds. If the goal is a pure shrimp line, physical separation and clean-start husbandry are more controllable.

Prevent spread between breeding systems

Amphipods can ride with plants, moss, leaf litter and wet equipment. Quarantine new plant material, inspect culture material and use dedicated tools where line purity matters. If you intentionally culture scuds as live food, keep that culture separate and harvest through a controlled method rather than pouring culture water into display or breeding tanks.

Australian biosecurity guidance recognises hitchhiking aquatic organisms as a translocation risk. Do not release scuds, plants, culture water or aquarium waste into waterways or stormwater, even if the scud species seems common.

When to reset rather than chase numbers forever

For a high-value breeding tank where complete exclusion is essential and physical removal cannot reach a dense population in substrate and moss, a controlled restart may be safer than repeated chemical attempts. Move wanted shrimp through a quarantine and inspection process, use clean or appropriately treated equipment and plants, and keep the old system contained until disposal is complete. A reset is disruptive, so reserve it for a defined breeding objective rather than cosmetic dislike of harmless microfauna.
