Inspect before the plants enter quarantine

Remove shipping media, rock wool or decaying leaves as appropriate for the plant. Under bright light inspect leaf undersides, nodes, roots and any attached hard material. Look for gelatinous egg masses, individual snails, worm-like animals, tiny crustaceans and aquatic insect larvae. Photograph anything uncertain before discarding it so the identification can guide the next step.

Do not pour retailer, pond or shipping water into your quarantine tank if it can be avoided. Transfer the plant itself with minimal source water. Treat all water and wet packaging as potentially connected to the source system.

Biosecurity includes disease, not just visible snails

Wet plants can carry water, microbes and microscopic life even when no large hitchhiker is visible. This is why sharing plants between tanks should be treated as a transfer event rather than a purely decorative change.

A heavily infested plant, an unknown predatory larva or material from a system with serious disease may not be worth salvaging. Disposal still needs containment: bag plant material and follow local waste requirements rather than placing aquatic plants or animals outdoors where they can reach drains or waterways.

Keep records for repeated purchases

Record supplier, arrival date, plant species, hitchhikers found, any treatment used and the quarantine outcome. Over time those records show which sources and plant types need more scrutiny. They also prevent a recurring hitchhiker from being blamed on the most recent purchase when it has actually persisted in the quarantine equipment.
