Seed shrimp, or ostracods, are small crustaceans with a shell-like two-part carapace. Most tiny free-living seed shrimp seen grazing aquarium surfaces are not a reason to medicate fish or shrimp. Identify them first, check why their food supply has increased, and reduce excess organic material if the population is becoming a nuisance.

How seed shrimp look and move

Ostracods are crustaceans enclosed in a small bivalved carapace, which is why they can resemble moving seeds or tiny mussels. In aquariums they may appear as pale, cream, grey or darker dots that crawl over glass, plants and substrate or make short swimming movements. A phone macro lens or magnifier can reveal the rounded shell profile and appendages emerging from the opening.

Do not identify every moving white dot as an ostracod. Copepods often have a more obvious tapered body and jerky swimming pattern, while newly hatched snails and other microfauna have different shapes. Identification matters because “microcrustacean” includes both free-living species and parasitic groups; the fact that an animal is a crustacean does not make all members equivalent.

What they are doing in the tank

Freshwater ostracods occupy many natural habitats. UF/IFAS describes seed shrimp that feed on periphyton—a community that includes algae, microbes and detritus attached to submerged surfaces. That makes their presence in a mature planted aquarium unsurprising. They often arrive unnoticed on plants, damp hardscape or material moved from another aquatic system.

A small stable population can simply be part of the decomposer and grazer community. Numbers can rise when there is abundant fine food, decaying plant tissue, biofilm or uneaten feed. In shrimp tanks with no fish predation, more of the population may remain visible.

Are they a threat to shrimp, eggs or fry?

Do not make a universal claim about every ostracod species. The class is diverse, and feeding behaviour varies. For the common free-living aquarium populations that are grazing surfaces and detritus, observation is more useful than assuming predation. Watch whether animals are simply sharing food or whether there is repeated direct contact with vulnerable eggs, freshly moulted shrimp or immobile fry.

If losses are occurring, investigate the high-probability causes at the same time: water quality, food access, temperature, oxygen, moulting conditions and known predators. Finding seed shrimp beside a dead animal does not prove they killed it; scavengers commonly gather on material that was already dead or dying.

Why chemical eradication is usually the wrong first move

A shrimp-safe, plant-safe, snail-safe and fish-safe “pest killer” is not a meaningful category without knowing the active ingredient, dose and target. Treatments aimed at crustaceans can also threaten ornamental shrimp and other desirable invertebrates. Even when livestock survive, killing a large microfauna population at once can add decomposing biomass to the system.

If the aquarium is being prepared for a controlled breeding or laboratory purpose where microfauna exclusion is genuinely required, use physical isolation and clean-start protocols rather than improvising a display-tank pesticide program.

Quarantine limits spread

Inspect new plants in a separate container and avoid pouring retailer or source water into established aquariums. Quarantine is not a guarantee that every ostracod egg will be seen, but it gives you time to notice unexpected organisms before they reach multiple systems. Dedicated nets and plant tools are especially useful when running shrimp lines or breeding tanks where cross-contamination is costly.

Australian biosecurity guidance treats movement of live aquatic material as a pathway for hitchhiking organisms and disease. Keep aquarium organisms contained. Do not dispose of plants, animals or tank water into natural waterways or stormwater.

When the identification needs another look

Reassess if the organism is attached to fish, causes visible tissue damage, is much larger than the typical tiny seed-like animals, or behaves unlike a free-living grazer. Photograph the animal under magnification and compare multiple individuals. If imported stock or an unusual organism raises a biosecurity concern, keep it contained and seek qualified advice rather than moving it to another aquarium for “testing.”
