Practical first

This guide is written as an operating framework. Exact limits still depend on the organism, system volume, equipment and local rules.

Ask what the animal eats in nature

“Filter feeder” is not a complete diet. Particle size, food type, feeding time and flow all matter.

Check whether the aquarium can produce enough

A clean display may not support a sand-sifting star, cucumber or sponge even when water tests look excellent.

Target feed without polluting

Use measured food, controlled flow and observation. Heavy broadcast feeding can overwhelm filtration without feeding the target.

Watch body condition

Shrinking tissue, gaping clams, receding crowns or reduced activity can indicate slow starvation.

Do not use cleaners as consumables

An animal should not be added simply to solve algae or detritus unless the system can support it after the visible problem is gone.
