Start with the species, not a salt number
Brackish water is not one fixed recipe. Estuaries, mangroves and tidal rivers change over space and time, and aquarium species differ in the salinity they require as juveniles and adults. Decide which animals the system is for before choosing a target.
Measure salinity properly
Use a suitable refractometer or calibrated conductivity tool rather than estimating from spoonfuls. Record the target, actual reading, water temperature and the salt product used. Stability matters more than chasing a dramatic “brackish” label.
Plan the adult system
Monos, scats, archerfish and shark catfish can outgrow small aquariums. Check adult size, group behaviour and swimming space before purchase. A juvenile display is not a permanent plan.
Use marine salt mix where minerals matter
Ordinary sodium chloride does not reproduce the mineral balance of seawater. When a species needs true brackish conditions, use an appropriate marine salt mix and prepare replacement water consistently.
Acclimate slowly and deliberately
Salinity changes should follow the species and life stage, not a generic hourly rule. Avoid moving sick or newly transported animals through unnecessary osmotic change.
Track what changes
Log salinity, temperature, pH, alkalinity, livestock behaviour, appetite and water changes. A stable record makes gradual drift visible before it becomes a crisis.
