Understand what the cycle actually does
Fish and decomposition produce ammonia. Microbial communities oxidise ammonia to nitrite and then nitrite to nitrate. This process reduces immediate toxicity, but it does not make waste disappear. Nitrate and other dissolved material still accumulate unless removed or used by plants.
Give the biofilter what it needs
Nitrifying communities need oxygenated water, surface area, ammonia or nitrite as energy sources, and adequate alkalinity. A filter with media but poor flow is not functioning as designed. A sudden pH crash or oxygen failure can weaken the process.
Cycle by evidence
A tank is not cycled because a fixed number of days passed. It is ready when the system can process the expected waste load without measurable ammonia or nitrite under controlled testing. Add livestock gradually and keep testing as the real load increases.
Recognise common disruptions
- Replacing or sterilising mature filter media.
- Long power outages that stop oxygenated flow.
- Medication or chemicals that damage microbial communities.
- A sudden rise in stocking or feeding.
- Low alkalinity and falling pH.
What to record
Record the ammonia source or stocking change, daily ammonia and nitrite, nitrate trend, pH, temperature, water changes and filter work. Those records show whether the system is improving or simply being diluted.
