Clean from evidence, not a rigid date

A sponge that still flows well and is not shedding debris may not need cleaning. A heavily stocked grow-out tank may need attention much sooner than a lightly stocked planted tank. Watch bubble output, lifting force and visible debris.

Use a controlled cleaning method

  1. Remove aquarium water.Place some water from the tank into a clean bucket.
  2. Turn equipment off safely.Prevent the pump from running dry or airline from siphoning.
  3. Squeeze the sponge gently.Release trapped waste without trying to make the sponge look new.
  4. Inspect parts.Check uplift tube, airline, air stone and base for blockages.
  5. Restart and observe.Confirm normal flow and fish behaviour.

Protect the biological function

The filter community lives on many tank surfaces, but the sponge holds a major share in simple setups. Avoid hot water, disinfectant and unnecessary deep cleaning. If several filters serve one system, stagger cleaning rather than stripping all of them at once.

  • Cleaning every filter on the same day in a heavily stocked system.
  • Using household detergent or disinfectant.
  • Replacing a mature sponge because it looks stained.
  • Ignoring a blocked airline or air stone.
  • Failing to test water after a major filter disturbance.
