Choose plants for the tank you actually have

Match plants to your aquarium’s light, depth, temperature, substrate and livestock. A demanding carpeting plant is a poor choice for a low-light tank with no added carbon, while hardy rhizome plants may thrive there. Buying for appearance alone often creates a maintenance problem before the plant is even added.

Control light before chasing fertiliser

Light drives plant demand. Too little can limit growth; too much can push demand beyond the available nutrients and carbon while algae takes advantage of the imbalance. Begin with a consistent, moderate photoperiod and adjust only after observing new growth for long enough to see a real pattern.

Feed the plant through the right pathway

Some plants draw heavily from the water column, while rooted plants may benefit from nutrient-rich substrate or root fertilisation. A complete plan considers both macro and trace nutrients without assuming more is always better. Follow product directions and change one variable at a time.

Understand carbon limits

All aquatic plants need carbon. In lower-demand tanks, naturally available carbon may be enough for slower growth. Added carbon dioxide can support stronger growth, but it adds cost, equipment and risk. Poorly controlled gas injection can harm livestock. Do not use it casually.

Plant correctly

  • Do not bury rhizomes on plants such as Anubias and Java fern.
  • Separate tightly packed stems so light and flow can reach lower leaves.
  • Remove damaged transit leaves without stripping the plant bare.
  • Anchor plants securely without crushing stems or roots.
  • Quarantine or inspect new plants for pests, eggs and unwanted hitchhikers.

Maintain plant mass

Trim dying leaves, remove trapped debris, keep flow paths open and replant healthy tops where appropriate. A planted tank is not maintenance-free. Neglected leaves and dense dead zones can collect waste and hide developing problems.

Troubleshoot logically

  1. Identify whether old or new leaves are affected.This narrows the likely process.
  2. Check recent changes.Lighting, fertiliser, carbon, temperature and livestock changes matter.
  3. Inspect roots and attachment points.A loose or buried rhizome can mimic a nutrient issue.
  4. Confirm actual light duration.Timers and ambient sunlight can differ from your assumption.
  5. Change one thing.Record it and wait long enough to judge new growth.

Treat algae as information

Algae is not proof that the tank needs a chemical cure. It often reveals excess light, unstable carbon, poor flow, accumulated waste or weak plant growth. Fix the system first; manual removal then becomes much more effective.
