Practical first

This guide is written as an operating framework. Exact limits still depend on the organism, system volume, equipment and local rules.

Age is only one signal

A tank does not become suitable for specialists because a fixed number of months passed. Stability, biodiversity, feeding capacity and maintenance history matter.

Track nutrient behaviour

A mature system shows predictable responses to feeding, stocking and water changes. Zero readings are not automatically proof of health.

Build food webs deliberately

Dragonets, filter feeders and sand-sifting animals may depend on pods, plankton or established substrate life.

Test resilience

A stable aquarium can recover from normal maintenance without wild swings. Do not add sensitive livestock while basic parameters are still erratic.

Match maturity to the organism

A captive-bred clownfish and a specialised starfish do not require the same biological resources.

Research and review
