Sponge filters

Sponge filters provide gentle biological and mechanical filtration with strong aeration. They suit fry, shrimp, breeding and multi-tank air systems. Their weaknesses are visible equipment, limited polishing and dependence on air delivery or a powerhead.

Hang-on-back and internal filters

These filters are compact and can provide useful circulation and easy media access. Intakes may need guards for fry or shrimp. Cartridge systems should not force routine disposal of all mature media; maintain biological media separately where possible.

Canister filters

Canisters offer large media volume and flexible flow routing. They also hide accumulating waste and can create serious leaks if hoses, seals or valves fail. Maintenance must be scheduled before flow visibly collapses.

Choose from the failure mode

• Can the livestock tolerate the intake and flow?
• Will the filter restart after a power outage?
• Can it be cleaned without moving the tank?
• What happens if a hose disconnects or an airline stops?
• Is spare filtration available during maintenance or treatment?

Common mistakes

• Buying only by advertised flow rate.
• Replacing all media on a schedule.
• Ignoring oxygenation because water is moving.
• Using unguarded intakes with small livestock.
