Map the air route before cutting tube

Count filters, estimate future expansion and decide where the pump, main line and individual drops will sit. The shortest route is not always the best route if it creates tight bends, inaccessible joins or water traps.

  • Keep tubing away from hot surfaces and sharp edges.
  • Leave service loops so filters can be moved for cleaning.
  • Label drops in large fish rooms.
  • Allow spare capacity instead of running every outlet fully open.

Place and protect the air pump

Use a stable, dry position with ventilation. If the pump sits below water level, fit correctly oriented check valves and still route the line to reduce siphon risk. A check valve is a backup component, not permission to place electrical equipment where leaks are likely.

Balance flow at the outlets

Open the most distant or restricted outlets first, then reduce stronger branches. A loop main can improve pressure consistency across long racks. Use individual valves for adjustment rather than kinking tubing.

Test failure modes

  1. Switch the pump off.Watch for back-siphon and water movement.
  2. Disconnect one line.Confirm the system does not lose all useful pressure.
  3. Simulate a blocked filter.Check whether other outlets become excessive.
  4. Restore power.Confirm the pump restarts and every filter resumes flow.

Keep the system serviceable

Inspect brittle tubing, loose joins, clogged stones, dirty sponge filters and noisy diaphragms. Falling flow is not always a pump problem; resistance can increase slowly throughout the system.

Common mistakes

  • Using one undersized pump at its limit with no backup plan.
  • Placing check valves where they cannot be inspected.
  • Running tubing through pinch points.
  • Hiding joins behind full tanks.
  • Failing to test the system after filter cleaning or rack changes.
