Calculate the real load
Water alone weighs roughly one kilogram per litre, before the tank, substrate, rocks, lids and equipment are added. Multiply that across every level and include a realistic safety margin. Do not rely on a rack’s marketing label without checking how the load is distributed and whether the shelf configuration matches the rating.
Support tanks evenly
Follow the aquarium manufacturer’s support requirements. Some tanks require full continuous support; others are designed for perimeter support. Use a level, rigid surface and suitable underlay only where appropriate. A twisted rack can place stress into glass even when it looks almost level.
Design for hands, hoses and emergencies
