Discard the soft section. Replanting rotten tissue traps more decaying material in the substrate and rarely restores the stem. Many fast-growing aquarium stems can be restarted from a firm top cutting.

Do not bury leaves and compressed bunches

Commercial stem plants are often sold in bunches. Leaving the bunch tightly bound and pushing it into the substrate can crush stems and create a shaded, stagnant centre. Separate the stems, remove lower leaves that would otherwise be buried, and plant with enough space for each stem to receive light and circulation.

Use tweezers to place the bare lower stem into the substrate without repeatedly pinching the same point. If the stem is fragile, hold it above the cut end and allow substrate to settle around it rather than forcing it down.

Separate transplant melt from continuing base rot

Plants grown emersed can replace old foliage after submersion. That transition can look dramatic but should be accompanied by firm new submerged growth. By contrast, a stem that repeatedly softens at the substrate line after each replanting is showing a local mechanical or environmental problem.

Track which stems fail. If only the deepest or most shaded plants rot, overcrowding and light penetration deserve attention. If every stem fails soon after planting, review handling, substrate conditions, temperature and water chemistry.

Check flow, debris and substrate conditions

A stem base does not need powerful current, but thick detritus, a very compact planting and decaying leaves can create poor conditions around soft tissue. During maintenance, remove loose dead plant matter from the surface without aggressively stirring deep substrate around livestock. Make sure the filter is moving water through the planted area.

Substrate depth and composition affect anchoring and nutrient storage, but a deeper bed is not automatically healthier. If plants are planted far deeper than necessary, more living stem is placed in darkness and can be damaged during insertion.

Replant healthy cuttings and watch the new node

Cut above the damaged section with clean scissors, remove leaves that will be below the surface, and replant the firm stem. Keep spacing generous until recovery is obvious. A healthy cutting should maintain firmness and produce new roots or shoots from nodes rather than becoming translucent at the base.

Only after the planting problem is stable should you adjust fertilisation or carbon supply. Make one change at a time. That prevents a simple damaged-stem problem from turning into algae or nutrient instability through unnecessary dosing.

Use the cut-and-replant cycle to diagnose the cause

Mark the day a healthy top cutting is replanted and inspect the stem base after several days and again after new roots appear. If the same section softens rapidly, the cause is still present. If the cutting stays firm but older stems continue failing, the problem may have been damage or decay already carried in the original bunch.

Compare stems at the front, centre and back of the planting. A failure concentrated in the darkest centre supports crowding or shading, while random failures immediately after maintenance point more toward handling damage. This spatial pattern is often more diagnostic than the colour of one leaf.

Avoid treating soft tissue with general fish medications, algaecides or disinfectants unless there is a defined plant-safe reason. Many products add stress to the aquarium without repairing already dead stem tissue. Mechanical removal of decay and correction of planting conditions are the first-line response.
