A parasite, by contrast, is defined by its relationship with a host, not by being worm-shaped.
Watch several individuals before reaching for treatment. Note whether they glide on the glass, wriggle through open water, stay buried in detritus, form clusters at the surface, or remain attached to fish skin, gills or the mouth. Photograph them beside a ruler or known object. A close, well-lit video is far more useful for later identification than a memory of “tiny white worms.”
When they are probably free-living
A population that is concentrated in mulm, filter sponges or the upper substrate and does not attach to livestock is more consistent with free-living detritus-associated organisms. These animals can feed on microbes and decomposing organic material and are part of the food web in many freshwater habitats. In an aquarium, seeing a few does not prove poor water quality and does not justify sterilising the tank.
A sudden visible increase does tell you that conditions changed in a way that favoured them. Common aquarium causes include uneaten food, dead plant tissue, accumulated waste in low-flow areas or a reduction in animals that normally eat microfauna. Treat the population as a clue to inspect husbandry rather than as a diagnosis by itself.
Do not confuse them with a fish-health problem
Change the response if the organism is attached to fish, fish are flashing or breathing abnormally, there are ulcers or bleeding points, or the suspected worm appears to emerge from tissue. Those signs move the problem into fish-health diagnosis. Leeches and several other parasite groups have very different life histories and treatment needs from harmless substrate worms.
Do not dose a whole aquarium with dewormers simply to make free-living worms disappear. Medication can affect non-target animals and biological processes, and treating without identifying the target makes it difficult to know whether the intervention worked. If fish are affected, isolate and document the signs and seek aquatic-veterinary or laboratory help when losses are significant or the identity is uncertain.
Reduce a nuisance population safely

Prevent unwanted transfers between aquariums
Microfauna can travel on wet nets, plants, substrate, filter media and small amounts of water. Keep quarantine tools separate and inspect plants and hardscape before moving them between systems. If a tank has unexplained disease, do not move “safe-looking” microfauna or wet equipment to another aquarium until the health problem is resolved.
