That common name is useful for description but weak for predicting behaviour. Colour alone is also unreliable because lighting, size and species variation can change appearance.
Start with clear photographs of the head, bristle arrangement and overall body, preferably without touching the worm. Record whether it emerges only for leftover food, stays inside rock, grazes dead material or has been directly observed damaging coral or another animal.
Why many worms are tolerated
Scavenging polychaetes can consume leftover food and dead organic material in rockwork where a siphon cannot reach easily. A few worms appearing during feeding are therefore not proof of a reef failure. Population size can rise when the aquarium offers more food, just as populations of other scavengers do.
The useful management question is whether the worms are contributing to clean-up without causing observed harm. If corals are healthy and worms are feeding on leftovers or carcasses, their presence may not justify dismantling rockwork or exposing the tank to a chemical treatment.
Fireworms require more caution
Amphinomid fireworms have prominent defensive bristles. Smithsonian Ocean notes that fireworm setae can be hollow and contain venom, producing a burning sensation when they pierce skin. Some fireworm species are also active predators or coral feeders. This is a people-safety issue as well as an aquarium-identification issue.
Never pick up an unknown bristled worm with bare fingers. Use long forceps, a trap or a rigid container, and wear gloves and eye protection when moving rock that may conceal large worms. If bristles enter skin, follow appropriate first-aid guidance and seek medical advice for significant pain, swelling, breathing symptoms or an uncertain reaction.
Evidence that removal is warranted
Remove an individual when you have credible evidence of harmful behaviour, it is a hazardous fireworm, it is reaching a size or density incompatible with the system, or the tank has a husbandry objective that requires exclusion. Direct observation of feeding on healthy coral is stronger evidence than finding a worm on tissue that was already dying.
Before blaming worms for coral loss, check water chemistry, lighting, flow, temperature, fish predation and disease. Scavengers are often the first animals seen on damaged tissue because the original problem happened earlier.
Use physical control first

Adding a fish solely because it is reputed to eat worms can also create compatibility and welfare problems. The new fish still needs suitable tank size, diet, social conditions and long-term care, and it may prefer other prey.
Contain removed marine organisms
Do not release bristle worms, fireworms, live rock organisms or marine aquarium water into the environment. Keep removed specimens and trap water contained and dispose of them through an appropriate waste route. Australian aquatic-health guidance is explicit about preventing aquarium organisms and water from reaching waterways or stormwater.
Quarantine live rock, macroalgae and coral bases where practical and inspect them before transfer. Marine hitchhikers are not all harmful, but quarantine gives you time to separate useful biodiversity from organisms you do not want in the display.
