Re-seed early instead of waiting for a total crash

Take a small amount from the actively crawling edge of a productive culture and start the next container before the old bed smells bad. Stagger cultures by several days or weeks depending on productivity. This also makes experimentation safer: change one variable—medium, yeast amount, temperature or ventilation—in one container while keeping a known-working backup.

Harvest worms, not culture sludge

Wipe worms from the container wall with a clean finger, swab or small tool, or use another method that transfers minimal substrate. Fry tanks have little buffering against oxygen demand and ammonia, so spooning fermented medium into the aquarium undermines the reason for culturing a small live food. Rinse harvested worms if your method allows and feed an amount the fry consume promptly.

Keep live-food cultures separate and disposable

Treat a live-food culture as a small livestock system, not as a jar that can be ignored until feeding day. Use dedicated spoons, pipettes and harvest tools; label start dates; and keep at least one backup culture physically separate. Harvest clean organisms rather than transferring large quantities of culture medium into fry tanks, because excess yeast, vinegar, decomposing feed or substrate can foul a small aquarium much faster than the live food itself.

Do not dump failed cultures, live worms, culture water or plant material outdoors or into stormwater. Production usually falls for a reason that can be seen or smelled. Compare the failing container with a healthy backup: moisture, surface texture, temperature, food depth, condensation and odour. If the medium has dried, a small controlled moisture correction may help; if it has become flooded and foul, adding more cereal is unlikely to restore oxygen through the bed. Heavy mould, mites or fruit flies are also signals to restart rather than repeatedly feeding the contamination.

Keep simple culture records so failure becomes diagnosable. Note the start date, medium, inoculum source and when harvest first became strong. Start the next culture while the current one is still productive, not after it collapses. That overlap turns microworms from a fragile single jar into a reliable feeding system. If fry depend on microworms as a first food, maintain a second food option as well; culture redundancy matters because a biological culture can fail even when the keeper has done nothing obviously wrong that day.
