Use species-specific husbandry information and the animal’s condition to set the pace rather than a universal “one drop per second” rule.

Avoid the bag-water trap

Shipping water accumulates carbon dioxide, ammonia and waste. Once a bag is opened and gas exchange changes its chemistry, prolonged acclimation can create its own water-quality problem. For long-shipped fish, prepare a clean acclimation container and transfer as little shipping water as practical. Keep temperature stable and oxygen adequate, and never add bag water to the display if quarantine or disease-control procedures say otherwise.

Watch the animal, not just the clock

Loss of equilibrium, frantic dashing, persistent surface breathing, sudden colour loss or collapse are signs to stop treating acclimation as a timetable exercise. Recheck temperature, oxygen and salinity and decide whether the fish needs to be moved to a stable prepared environment. A stressed animal may be reacting to transport, ammonia, temperature or handling rather than salinity alone, so avoid making multiple unexplained changes at once.

Quarantine still matters in brackish systems

Salinity does not make a fish disease-free. New fish can introduce parasites, bacteria and other pathogens, and imported ornamental fish are specifically managed as a biosecurity risk in Australia. A quarantine system should be capable of holding the same target salinity and providing established biological filtration, hides and oxygen without sharing wet equipment with the main aquarium.

Treat salinity as a measured water parameter

“Brackish” is not one recipe. It describes water between fresh and marine conditions, while different species occupy very different parts of that range. Set a target from the known needs and provenance of the animals you are keeping, then measure it consistently. Use a marine salt mix when you are intentionally making brackish water; ordinary table salt does not reproduce the mineral composition of seawater and is a poor basis for a permanent brackish system.

Record the salinity or specific gravity alongside temperature because readings and instrument behaviour can vary with temperature and calibration. Mix replacement water fully before it reaches livestock and match the established target rather than “adding a scoop” to the aquarium. Stability matters more than chasing a generic number, and any deliberate change should be slow enough for the livestock and biological filter to adapt unless an emergency requires otherwise.

Judge acclimation by the animal and the measured change

Acclimation should bridge a known difference, not follow a fixed timer copied from another species. Measure temperature and salinity in both the transport water and destination system first. If they are already close, unnecessarily long exposure to dirty transport water can be counterproductive. If the salinity difference is large, move the animal through an appropriately staged process that reflects its known tolerance and provenance. Sensitive or weakened fish deserve more conservative handling, not a faster transfer because they already look stressed.

After release, keep lighting subdued and avoid immediate heavy feeding or chasing. Watch respiration, balance, swimming and hiding behaviour, then recheck salinity and water quality rather than assuming every post-transfer problem is osmotic. Quarantine remains useful because acclimation does not remove infectious risk. Record the salinity the animal arrived in and the salinity it ultimately thrives in; that information is more valuable for future transfers than an undocumented label such as 'freshwater' or 'brackish' from a shop tank.
