The problem is not whether another species “fits in the tank”

A cool-water fish may still nip gills. Shrimp or small fish may be swallowed, which exposes the axolotl to whatever parasites or hard structures the prey carries. Snails can also be ingested or injure soft tissue depending on size and species.
Axolotls can injure each other too
Research colonies reduce density and separate differently sized young because juveniles bite limbs and tails. Regeneration does not make those injuries acceptable husbandry. Adults are less frantic feeders than larvae but can still snap during feeding. Match size closely, provide visual breaks and enough floor area, and distribute food so one animal is not repeatedly striking through another to reach a meal.
Quarantine does not disappear in a species-only tank
A second axolotl can bring pathogens just as a fish can. Quarantine new animals with separate wet equipment and observe appetite, skin, gills and waste before sharing a system. Avoid moving nets, hides or siphons between enclosures without an appropriate cleaning process. If one animal develops unexplained lesions or systemic illness, separation also makes observation and targeted veterinary management easier.
Have a separation tank before attempting co-housing
Do not wait for the first bitten gill to discover there is nowhere else to put an animal. A spare food-safe tub or cycled aquarium, temperature control and dedicated equipment are part of the plan. Separate immediately for repeated nipping, major size disparity, chronic food competition, injury or incompatible health status. “They have been fine for months” is not a guarantee that feeding or maturity will never change the interaction.
Use husbandry first, not home remedies
Axolotls are aquatic amphibians with permeable skin and external gills, so aquarium remedies that are casually used for fish are not automatically appropriate for them. When something looks wrong, document temperature, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, recent water changes, appetite, faeces and any new animals or equipment before reaching for salt baths, antiseptics or medications. Fixing an environmental problem is often the first useful action and it also gives a veterinarian better information if the animal needs treatment.
Handle only when necessary and avoid chasing the animal around the tank. If it must be moved, use a smooth container that supports the body rather than a coarse net that can snag gills or skin. Persistent refusal to eat, marked swelling, bleeding, open sores, severe gill deterioration, inability to remain upright, repeated floating with distress, or a rapid decline despite corrected water conditions warrants an amphibian- or exotics-experienced veterinarian.
Make separation easy before compatibility fails
A shared enclosure should never be the only housing available. Keep a clean food-safe tub or second cycled setup, conditioned water, dedicated tools and a temperature plan so an injured or bullied animal can be separated immediately. Observe feeding from start to finish; many compatibility problems happen when one axolotl lunges through another to reach food rather than during quiet periods. If size difference increases, change the arrangement before the smaller animal becomes the test case.
Quarantine new axolotls independently even if the long-term plan is to house them together. This gives time to observe appetite, skin and gills and avoids introducing a health problem into the established system on day one. Mixed-species housing adds more variables and is rarely worth the compromise: temperature needs, predation, fin or gill nipping, hard shells, disease exposure and competition all have to be compatible simultaneously. A tank mate is not enrichment if its presence increases injury or forces the axolotl outside suitable husbandry conditions.
